چکیده

In the usual optical ow detection, the gradient constraint, which expresses the relationship between the gradient of the image intensity and its motion, is combined with the least-squares criterion. This criterion means assuming that only the time derivative of the image intensity contains noise. In this paper, we assume that all image derivatives contain noise and derive a new optical ow detection technique. Since this method requires the knowledge about the covariance matrix of the noise, we also discuss a method for its estimation. Our experiments show that the proposed method can compute optical ow more accurately than the conventional method. key words: image motion, maximum likelihood estimation, least-squares criterion, covariance matrix, generalized eigenvalues, derivative kernels.

Ohta : Uncertainty Models of the Gradient Constraint 959

The uncertainty involved in the gradient constraint for optical ow detection is often modeled as constant Gaussian noise added to the time-derivative of the image intensity. In this paper, we examine this modeling closely and investigate the error behavior by doing simulation. Our result indicates that the error depends on both the spatial derivatives and the image motion. We propose alternativ...

Fundamental matrix from optical flow: optimal computation and reliability evaluation

The optical flow observed by a moving camera satisfies, in the absence of noise, a special equation analogous to the epipolar constraint arising in stereo vision. Computing the ‘‘flow fundamental matrix’’ of this equation is an essential prerequisite to undertaking three-dimensional analysis of the flow. This article presents an optimal formulation of the problem of estimating this matrix under...

How Much Does Color Information Help Optical Flow Computation?

Optical flow is usually computed only on the basis of intensity information of images. Therefore, if we use color information in addition to the intensity, it is expected that more accurate optical flow can be computed. However, this intuition will be correct only when the following conditions are satisfied. First, the images should contain rich color variations. Moreover, it is also required t...

Comparing optimal three-dimensional reconstruction for finite motion and optical flow

We present two linear algorithms for 3-D reconstruction: one is for finite motion; the other is for optical flow. We compare their performance by simulation and real-image experiments, using the same data. The two algorithms are both theoretically optimal, extracting maximum information from the input. We observe that the 3-D reconstruction by the finite motion algorithm is generally more accur...

Comparing Optimal 3-D Reconstruction for F inite Motion and Optical F low

We present a theoretically optimal linear algorithm for 3-D reconstruction from point correspondences over two views. We also present a similarly constructed optimal linear algorithm for 3-D reconstruction from optical flow. We then compare the performance of the two algorithms by simulation and real-image experiments using the same data. This is the first impartial comparison ever done in the ...
